Pre-loading image components onto hosts with vSphere Lifecycle Manager, without applying them yet, so that hosts spend less time in maintenance mode when remediation runs.

Each book explains staging in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- vSphere Lifecycle Manager
Service in vCenter for installing, updating and upgrading ESX hosts and clusters based on a desired image. From 9.0, host upgrades cannot be done with baselines.
- remediation
Applying updates through vSphere Lifecycle Manager, entering maintenance mode where needed, so that every cluster and host ends up compliant with its image or baselines. Readiness can first be confirmed by a pre-check that changes nothing.
- Agents (classic) API
First-generation Foundry Agent Service API, based on threads, messages and runs. It is deprecated, replaced by conversations and responses, and retires on 31 March 2027.
Related terms
- Calculated table
Instead of coming from a data source, this kind of model table is defined by a DAX formula. It's always held in Import mode and recomputed on each refresh, which makes it handy for staging intermediate results or duplicating a table for role-playing.
- Compliance check
Reports whether hosts or clusters match their image or baseline in vLCM, altering nothing. Pre-checks, staging and remediation are the later steps.
- Data destination
Where a Dataflow Gen2 query writes its results, for example a lakehouse, a warehouse or an Azure SQL database. Each query may have a different one, and sending output to a warehouse needs staging enabled.
- Dataflow staging items
When staging is switched on, Dataflow Gen2 creates a DataflowsStagingLakehouse and a DataflowsStagingWarehouse in the workspace to keep intermediate data. Fabric looks after them, and you shouldn't work with them directly.
- Device staging
A way of enrolling Android Enterprise devices in which a vendor or admin completes the provisioning using a staging token. Until a person signs in to the Microsoft Intune app, it remains userless, with Staging_ at the start of its name.
- End-to-end test
A test that exercises the full flow, from loading raw data through to the final tables users see, carried out in a staging setup that matches production before anything is promoted.
- Integration test
Checks that pieces of a system cooperate correctly, for example that a job produces the tables it should. It usually runs after deploying to staging, confirming the job completes and the data passes quality checks.
- Staged copy
A Copy activity option, Enable staging, which lands the source data in temporary storage and converts it there so that COPY can load it into the warehouse, deleting the interim files afterwards. The temporary area can be Fabric's own workspace staging, which times out after 60 minutes, or an ADLS Gen2 or Blob Storage account of your own.
