Every function is started by exactly one thing. That thing might be a web call over HTTP, a schedule, the arrival of a blob, a message landing in a queue or a change in a database.
Also called trigger.

Each book explains Azure Functions trigger in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- OVER
Gives a T-SQL window function its window: PARTITION BY, ORDER BY and, if wanted, a ROWS or RANGE frame. Rankings and running totals can then be worked out while every row is kept.
- HTTP
Hypertext Transfer Protocol, which sends data in clear text; VCF interfaces and APIs instead use HTTPS.
- BLOB
Short for binary large object: raw binary data, like pictures, audio, video or documents, that only an application can make sense of. Azure keeps these files as blobs in Blob Storage.
- Schema
The middle part of a Unity Catalog name (
catalog.schema.table), grouping tables, views, volumes, functions and models inside a catalog. A grant on it covers everything in it now and later, and nothing inside can be reached withoutUSE SCHEMA.
Related terms
- Auto-mapping
An Exchange Online feature that adds a mailbox to a person's Outlook by itself once they're given Full Access directly. Granting that permission via a group doesn't trigger it.
- Azure Monitor alerts
Rules in Azure Monitor that send notifications or trigger actions once a condition on metrics, logs or the activity log is satisfied.
- Batch processing
An approach where incoming records are gathered and kept, then handled all at once, whether on a timetable, once a set amount has built up, or on another trigger. It has more delay than stream processing but copes well with large amounts of data.
- ChecksFailedPercent
One of the Connection Monitor metrics, together with
RoundTripTimeMsand Test Result, on which Azure Monitor metric alerts can trigger, for instance when a site-to-site VPN goes down. - Contain device
Blocks a compromised or unmanaged device from talking to the rest of the estate by telling all onboarded devices to refuse its traffic. Attack disruption can trigger this Defender for Endpoint action too, and Release from containment undoes it.
- Continuous job
A Lakeflow job whose continuous trigger launches a fresh run the moment the last one finishes. For keeping a pipeline running non-stop, Databricks prefers this to the pipeline's own Continuous mode.
- Cosmos DB change feed
Durable, ordered log of what has been inserted or updated in an Azure Cosmos DB container, plus deletes when all versions and deletes mode is on. Consumers include the Azure Functions Cosmos DB trigger and the change feed processor.
- DDL trigger
A trigger that responds to server or database events like CREATE, ALTER, DROP, GRANT, DENY or REVOKE. It is commonly used to record or prevent changes to the schema.
