The set of files a job produces over time, starting with a full backup and followed by incrementals, metadata and other files. Which files appear, and in what order, depends on the backup method chosen.

Terms in this definition
- Set
Secret permission in Key Vault for writing secrets; some older material refers to it as Create.
- Job
A sequence of steps executed together on one agent or runner, or on the server for agentless work. While running, each occupies one of your parallel jobs.
- OVER
Gives a T-SQL window function its window: PARTITION BY, ORDER BY and, if wanted, a ROWS or RANGE frame. Rankings and running totals can then be worked out while every row is kept.
- Metadata
Describes data rather than being the data itself, for instance how a file is laid out or what rows each chunk contains, so tools can read things efficiently.
- backup method
Three schemes exist: forward incremental, forever forward incremental and reverse incremental. The one chosen fixes which files make up a chain and their sequence, and so how heavily and in what way the repository is read and written.
Related terms
- Copy Backup
Copying an entire backup chain once to another repository or a local folder; the result then appears under an (Exported) node. A backup copy job handles scheduled copies, and backup export turns a single restore point into one VBK.
- per-machine backup files
A repository setting that gives every workload in a job its own backup chain, now in the form of per-machine files with separate metadata. Switching the setting leaves chains that already exist in their old format.
- VBK file
The Veeam file type for a full backup, holding an entire workload image and forming the first link of a backup chain.
- VSB
A small, temporary file containing only pointers to blocks in a disk backup chain, with no backup data of its own. Tape jobs use it to build a synthetic virtual full on tape.
