Terms in this definition
- Service key
The GUID identifying an ExpressRoute circuit, which you pass to the connectivity provider. It is not a secret, and charges begin as soon as it is issued.
- ExpressRoute
A dedicated private link between on-premises networks and Azure, using Microsoft peering or private peering.
- Peering location
Where, physically, an ExpressRoute circuit meets the Microsoft edge. Circuits cannot be pinned to availability zones, so stacking several at one location adds no zone resilience.
- ExpressRoute Direct
A pair of 10 or 100 Gbps ports connecting straight into Microsoft's edge without a connectivity provider. It is the sole circuit type offering MACsec.
- CONNECT
In SQL Server, the right to open a connection to a database. Fabric's equivalent is Read permission on an item, which allows connecting to a warehouse or SQL endpoint but not querying anything in it.
Related terms
- Azure ExpressRoute
A private link, arranged with a connectivity provider, between an on-premises network and Microsoft's cloud that avoids the public internet. Compared with a VPN it offers better reliability, higher speeds and steadier latency.
- Provider status
State of an ExpressRoute circuit as reported by the connectivity provider: Not provisioned, Provisioning or Provisioned. Peering can be set up only once it reads Provisioned.
