Serverless, event-driven Azure Functions hosting plan charged per execution; runs are capped at 10 minutes and VNet integration isn't available.
Also called Functions plan.

Each book explains Consumption in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- Serverless
Compute tier for single Azure SQL databases that scales automatically, pauses when idle and charges by the second. It is offered in General Purpose and Hyperscale, not Business Critical, and reserved capacity does not apply.
- Authorisation levels
Key requirements for HTTP triggers in Azure Functions: Anonymous needs no key, Function accepts a function or host key, and Admin requires the master key.
- Agents (classic) API
First-generation Foundry Agent Service API, based on threads, messages and runs. It is deprecated, replaced by conversations and responses, and retires on 31 March 2027.
- Regional VNet integration
From the Basic tier up, App Service can send outbound traffic into a VNet by way of a subnet delegated to
Microsoft.Web/serverFarms. Reaching the app privately from inside, though, calls for a private endpoint.
Related terms
- Agent Monitoring Dashboard
View in Microsoft Foundry, powered by Application Insights, that tracks token consumption, latency, successful runs and evaluation scores and can raise alerts. It gives visibility at runtime and is not a gate for releases.
- Azure Functions
Serverless compute for event-driven code, started by triggers such as HTTP, timer, Blob or Event Grid and hosted on a Consumption, Premium or Dedicated plan.
- Container Apps environment
Boundary that groups Azure Container Apps for security, isolation and networking; decisions about workload profiles versus Consumption only, a custom VNet, and internal or external access can't be changed after creation.
- Container Apps environments
Each one gives Azure Container Apps an isolated boundary in its own VNet and can host Consumption as well as Dedicated workload profiles; its network setup can't be altered after creation.
- Container Apps workload profiles
The default Container Apps environment type, offering Consumption and Dedicated profiles on a subnet of at least /27; unlike the legacy Consumption-only type (/23), it supports UDRs, private endpoints and NAT Gateway egress.
- Copilot Credit Pre-purchase Plan
A twelve-month Azure commitment for buying Copilot Credits at a reduced rate. Consumption is taken from it first, then falls back to pay-as-you-go when it's used up.
- Image detail level
An option on an
input_imageitem, either low, high or the default auto, that balances resolution against token consumption. With low, a 512x512 version of the image is processed. - Logic Apps authorization policy
Setting on a logic app that checks Microsoft Entra OAuth tokens sent to request-based triggers against an issuer and claims. SAS still works alongside it unless you also turn on Disable SAS authentication, which only Consumption offers.
