Terms in this definition
- Storage Spaces Direct
Combines the internal drives of between two and 16 servers in a cluster into highly available, software-defined storage. It is part of Windows Server Datacenter.
- ReFS
Resilient File System, aimed at large scale and data integrity: checksums, block cloning, mirror-accelerated parity and online repair with Storage Spaces. Windows cannot boot from it, and disk quotas and ODX, both found in NTFS, are missing.
- Volume
Holds non-tabular files sitting in cloud storage under Unity Catalog governance, addressed as
/Volumes/<catalog>/<schema>/<volume>. A volume can be external or managed, andWRITE VOLUMEorREAD VOLUMEdecide who may use it. - FIRST
A DAX function available only inside visual calculations. It fetches the value at the start of one axis of the visual's matrix, which makes it handy for comparing each point with the first; its opposite is LAST.
- Capacity
A reserved block of compute for a tenant whose size is fixed by its SKU; Fabric F SKUs express it in capacity units (CUs). Workspaces assigned to it unlock features like Copilot, and from F64 upwards people with free licences can view Power BI content.
Related terms
- Nested resiliency
Designed only for two-server Storage Spaces Direct clusters, either as nested two-way mirror or nested mirror-accelerated parity. Volumes stay available even when a drive and a server fail at the same moment.
