The slowest VMware transport, though it works with any setup: ESXi reads VM data and passes it over the LAN to the proxy via NBD on the management network.
Also called NBD.

Terms in this definition
- ESX
VMware's bare-metal hypervisor, installed on each host in a VCF fleet. Up to version 9.0 it was known as ESXi.
- OVER
Gives a T-SQL window function its window: PARTITION BY, ORDER BY and, if wanted, a ROWS or RANGE frame. Rankings and running totals can then be worked out while every row is kept.
- LAN
A local area network covering a single site. By default, Delivery Optimization downloads share content between peers that sit behind the same NAT.
- Veeam Infrastructure Appliance
A hardened, minimal Linux (JeOS) ISO for running backup proxies, repositories and hardened repositories. It connects to a backup server but does not host one.
- management network
Carries traffic between an ESX host and vCenter, along with other management traffic. From the DCUI, Configure Management Network lets an administrator change its VLAN, addressing, name servers and NICs.
Related terms
- Direct storage access
Here the proxy works with VM data directly on the storage array, through Direct SAN, Direct NFS or storage snapshots. No mode is faster, and if permitted Veeam can fall back to network mode.
- NBDSSL
Encrypts data travelling from the ESXi host to the proxy in Network mode, switched on with the matching option. Expect extra host CPU and possibly slower jobs.
- Virtual Disk Development Kit
VMware's programming library for virtual disk access. Network (NBD) and the other VDDK-based proxy transport modes depend on it, which is partly why Veeam suggests keeping proxies off the backup server.
