The code editor from Microsoft. Together with the .NET SDK and the SQL Server (mssql) and SQL Database Projects extensions, it can build, check and publish SDK-style database projects for warehouses.
Also called Visual Studio Code.

Each book explains VS Code in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- SDK
Software development kit: client libraries, for example the Key Vault SDK or Speech SDK, that let code use a service without calling its REST API directly.
- SQL Server
The relational database from Microsoft that organisations host and run themselves, in their own data centres or on VMs. Its engine also sits underneath the Azure SQL services and SQL database in Fabric.
- Serverless
Compute tier for single Azure SQL databases that scales automatically, pauses when idle and charges by the second. It is offered in General Purpose and Hyperscale, not Business Critical, and reserved capacity does not apply.
- Schema
The middle part of a Unity Catalog name (
catalog.schema.table), grouping tables, views, volumes, functions and models inside a catalog. A grant on it covers everything in it now and later, and nothing inside can be reached withoutUSE SCHEMA.
Related terms
- Bicep linter
bicepconfig.json decides how serious each rule is. The rules, which descend from the ARM template test toolkit, run as static analysis inside both the VS Code extension and Bicep's CLI.
- IDE
Visual Studio Code, PyCharm and similar desktop editors are IDEs. Databricks Connect, or the Databricks extension for Visual Studio Code, lets code written in them execute and be debugged on Azure Databricks.
- Jupyter notebook
Analysts hunting or investigating in Microsoft Sentinel can work in these documents, where code sits alongside its output. They are run in Azure Machine Learning, or in Visual Studio Code with the Sentinel extension when the target is the data lake.
- Microsoft Sentinel MCP server
Lets AI assistants like Security Copilot or Visual Studio Code ask questions of Sentinel data lake data in everyday language, investigate entities and help triage incidents. Microsoft runs it for you; most of its tools assume you have onboarded to the data lake and hold Security Reader.
- Microsoft.Build.Sql
An SDK for modern, SDK-style .sqlproj projects. Running dotnet build on Windows, Linux or macOS turns the project into a .dacpac; the VS Code SQL Database Projects extension relies on it, and it is succeeding the legacy .NET Framework format.
- MSSQL extension
An add-on for Visual Studio Code that works with SQL Server, Azure SQL databases and Fabric's SQL database: you can connect, browse objects in Object Explorer, write queries and compare schemas. Combined with the extension for SQL Database Projects, it enables local development of warehouse projects.
- Playbook Generator
For Sentinel workspaces in the Defender portal, you chat with an AI coding agent in Visual Studio Code and it produces a Python playbook, which uses integration profiles to call outside APIs.
- Schema compare
A tool built on DacFx, found in SSMS, Visual Studio and the MSSQL extension for VS Code, that finds the differences between two sources (databases, SQL database projects or .dacpac files in any pairing). You can leave out chosen differences, then either update the target directly or produce a script that does so.
