A vCenter definition that monitors a type of object for a given event, condition or state; when triggered it marks the object Normal, Warning or Alert and can carry out actions, for instance emailing someone. VCF Operations alerts are a separate feature.

Each book explains Alarm in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- vCenter
Management software for VMs, clusters and ESX hosts. Each domain in VCF gets a dedicated one.
- Event
Table in Log Analytics where entries from Windows event logs are kept.
- State
A parameter in OAuth that carries custom data through the authorisation flow and back, as with the "Support state parameter" option in APIM.
- VCF Operations
VCF's console for running the fleet. It covers alerting, monitoring, capacity, reporting, log analysis and licensing alongside fleet management of identity, passwords, certificates and lifecycle.
Related terms
- alarm assignment
Sets the reach of an alarm: one object, a whole group such as a Business View group or an infrastructure container, or everything Veeam ONE watches. Individual items or groups may be excluded.
- alarm rule
Each alarm carries one or more of these. A rule states what fires the alarm, at which severity, and whether to suppress it; it may watch events, states or performance counters, and consecutive rules can be joined using AND/OR logic.
- analysis depth
Used by certain resource usage alarm rules in place of a fixed time window: it sets how many of the most recent values are averaged, and each fresh value is compared with that average.
- Backup Server security & compliance state
Alarm that tracks the security checks run against each Backup & Replication server. A recommendation that has not been applied raises an error; one whose state cannot be determined, or that was skipped, raises a warning.
- Business View group
A set of objects inside a Business View category that have something in common or meet the same criteria, similar to a tag. Objects may sit in more than one group, and a group can serve as the scope of an alarm.
- dashboard schedule
Automatic delivery of a dashboard, either sent by email or written to a network share or local folder. A dashboard may carry more than one, and any failed run triggers an alarm about scheduling problems.
- Recon Scanner threat detection
Built-in Veeam ONE alarm that goes off whenever an alert comes in from Recon Scanner, which reports on behaviour it considers suspicious.
- Remediation action
A fix Veeam ONE applies in response to a triggered alarm. It may be built in or a script of your own, and can run on its own or wait for someone to approve it; fixing backup infrastructure problems depends on the Veeam Analytics service being present on that backup server.
