Terms in this definition
- Catalog
The first level of Unity Catalog's
catalog.schema.tablenaming and the primary boundary for isolating data. Privileges granted on a catalog flow down to every schema and object it contains. - Unity Catalog
Azure Databricks' governance solution covering both data and AI in one place, with centralised permissions, auditing, data discovery and lineage.
- CRUD
Shorthand for create, read, update and delete, the four basic things you do with data. Data-plane roles in Azure Cosmos DB, for instance, authorise those operations on items.
- Metadata
Describes data rather than being the data itself, for instance how a file is laid out or what rows each chunk contains, so tools can read things efficiently.
- ALL
A DAX function that ignores any filters and gives back every row of a table or every value of the named columns. Used within CALCULATE, it works as a modifier that clears filters, although REMOVEFILTERS states that intent more clearly where it is available.
- Usage privileges
USE CATALOGandUSE SCHEMA: alone they expose no data, yet reaching any object inside requires them, so owners of catalogs and schemas can cap what table owners share.
Related terms
- Catalog Explorer
Opened from Catalog in the sidebar, this is where you browse and administer Unity Catalog objects, their permissions and lineage, and their tags and comments.
- COMMENT ON
The SQL statement for writing, replacing or deleting the description stored on a Unity Catalog securable, from catalogs and schemas down to individual columns and volumes. Users with
BROWSEcan read those comments. - Content hub
Lets you browse and install Microsoft Sentinel solutions, or standalone items such as playbooks, workbooks, hunting queries, analytics rules and data connectors, all supplied out of the box.
- GAL
The directory of all mail-enabled recipients in an Exchange Online organisation, which people browse when addressing messages in Outlook. Mail users and mail contacts are listed in it, and admins can hide any recipient from view.
- Marketplace
Where VCF Operations admins browse, install and update management packs from VMware Marketplace, under Administration > Integrations.
- Model catalog
Where the Foundry portal lets you browse, benchmark, try out and deploy models, filtering by task, capability or deployment option; providers include OpenAI, Microsoft, Meta, Anthropic, Cohere, Mistral and Hugging Face.
- MSSQL extension
An add-on for Visual Studio Code that works with SQL Server, Azure SQL databases and Fabric's SQL database: you can connect, browse objects in Object Explorer, write queries and compare schemas. Combined with the extension for SQL Database Projects, it enables local development of warehouse projects.
- Share snapshot
Captures a whole Azure file share at one point in time as a copy that can't be changed; on Windows, users browse it through Previous Versions.
