Veeam stores details of its infrastructure, jobs and sessions in this SQL Server or PostgreSQL database, which can be local or remote and is tidied each week by DatabaseMaintenance.

In the Ultra Transcenders books
Each book explains configuration database in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- Microsoft SQL Server
Microsoft's database engine. It can hold Veeam's configuration database in place of PostgreSQL, and is protected with a dedicated plug-in, Veeam Explorer, and application-aware processing plus log backup.
- PostgreSQL
Short for Azure Cosmos DB for PostgreSQL, a Citus-based distributed relational service that scales writes out horizontally. New projects are steered away from it towards Azure Database for PostgreSQL elastic clusters.
- Schema
The middle part of a Unity Catalog name (
catalog.schema.table), grouping tables, views, volumes, functions and models inside a catalog. A grant on it covers everything in it now and later, and nothing inside can be reached withoutUSE SCHEMA. - LSDOU
The sequence in which Group Policy is processed: the local policy first, followed by site, domain and organisational unit policies. The nearest, last-processed setting takes effect unless Enforced or Block Inheritance alters that.
- DatabaseMaintenance
A built-in weekly job, also run each time the Veeam Backup Service restarts, that refreshes configuration database statistics, defragments its indexes and removes data no longer needed.
Related terms
- Amazon RDS
AWS's hosted relational database service. Veeam's AWS integration can protect it, but it is not supported as a home for Veeam's configuration database.
- ASP.NET Core Data Protection
On Linux, Veeam Backup & Replication encrypts data held in its configuration database using this Microsoft framework; DPAPI fills that role on Windows.
- BCO
Veeam saves configuration backups in this format, which packages XML exports of the configuration database so that a backup server's setup can later be recovered or moved elsewhere.
- Cloud Credentials Manager
Holds the logins Veeam needs for cloud platforms, such as AWS keys, Azure accounts, Google Cloud accounts and Cloud Connect accounts, encrypted inside the configuration database. Logins for servers are kept elsewhere, in the Credentials Manager.
- Credentials Manager
In the console, this holds the accounts Veeam uses to reach infrastructure servers, including gMSAs and SSH keys, encrypted in the configuration database. Cloud logins have their own Cloud Credentials Manager.
- data collection job
Enterprise Manager uses this job to copy information from each connected backup server's configuration database into its own, every quarter of an hour by default or when started by hand.
- Password Manager
The place in the configuration database where job encryption passwords are kept; each password may be used by a single job or by many. Once any password is stored there, the configuration backup has to be encrypted.
- Veeam Backup & Replication console
A Windows program that talks to the backup server and from which administrators carry out protection and restore tasks. It never reaches infrastructure servers or the configuration database itself; the backup server does that on its behalf.
