Veeam relies on this checksum to confirm data is intact, for example on backup metadata during health checks, and to detect changed files by comparing checksum trees in the cache repository for unstructured data.
Also called cyclic redundancy check.

Each book explains CRC in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- Checksum
Confirms that a check digit in text found by a custom sensitive information type's regex is correct, calculated from weights and a mod value. The advanced version can only be set up in PowerShell XML.
- Metadata
Describes data rather than being the data itself, for instance how a file is laid out or what rows each chunk contains, so tools can read things efficiently.
- cache repository
A place where temporary metadata is cached for jobs that back up file shares and object storage.
- Unstructured data
Information with no set data model, like logs, video, images, documents and other text or binary files. Azure Blob Storage is the service designed to store it.
Related terms
- backup health check
A scheduled check of the most recent restore point that verifies metadata with CRC and data blocks with a hash. When damage turns up, the next session re-reads the affected data from production to repair it.
- Veeam Backup Validator
A command-line tool that verifies backup files are intact by running a CRC check at file level. It works with backups held in the backup server's repositories, but not with those in object storage.
