Terms in this definition
- DNS
The system that turns names into addresses. In Azure, private endpoints depend on private DNS zones, which are queried through 168.63.129.16.
- VNet
A private network belonging to a single subscription and region and covering all of that region's availability zones. A VM can only use a VNet located in the same region.
- NIC
Network interface card, the network interface of a VM; NSGs can be associated with it.
- Azure-provided DNS
Default resolver for a VNet, at 168.63.129.16, which answers with records from private DNS zones linked to that VNet; a custom DNS server has to forward queries to it to resolve those records.
- AD DS
Short for Active Directory Domain Services, the domain controller-based Windows directory run on-premises. Microsoft Entra Domain Services offers a managed counterpart.
- Domain
A way of grouping workspaces by area of the business, in support of a data mesh approach. Items take on their workspace's domain, letting you filter the OneLake catalog by it, and certain tenant settings can be passed to domain admins; domains have no effect on access permissions.
- Virtual machines
Infrastructure-as-a-service compute giving complete control of the operating system, making it a fit for lift-and-shift moves and for software relying on OS-level pieces like COM.
