Infrastructure-as-a-service compute giving complete control of the operating system, making it a fit for lift-and-shift moves and for software relying on OS-level pieces like COM.
Also called VMs.

Each book explains Virtual machines in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- Deployment modes
The two ways ARM can deploy: Incremental, the default, creates or updates what the template lists and ignores everything else; Complete also removes resource group contents absent from the template.
- CONTROL
Granting this on a securable gives all other permissions on it too, making it the most powerful SQL permission. At database scope that includes UNMASK and ALTER ANY MASK. Warehouse access through the Admin, Member or Contributor workspace roles carries it.
- OS
Operating system, which you manage yourself on IaaS VMs. PaaS offerings like App Service do not expose it.
- LIKE
Compares strings with a pattern that can contain the % and _ wildcards. Because it only understands character patterns, searching big volumes of text this way is much slower than using full-text search.
- COM
Windows component technology (Component Object Model); since App Service can't register COM components, apps relying on them must run on VMs.
Related terms
- AAD DC Administrators
Grants members admin rights over joined VMs and control of Group Policy for AADDC containers in an Entra Domain Services managed domain. Enterprise Admins and Domain Admins rights don't exist there.
- AADDC Computers
Container built into an Entra Domain Services managed domain, holding joined VMs' computer accounts, with a GPO of its own.
- AllowVnetOutBound
Built-in NSG outbound rule at priority 65000 that lets VMs open connections towards their own VNet and peered VNets. The NSG at the destination still has to permit the port.
- Always On availability group
High-availability feature of SQL Server that keeps synchronous or asynchronous replicas on different servers or VMs without shared storage. As every replica is a live SQL Server, it is an expensive way to provide DR.
- Automated Backup
Feature of the SQL IaaS Agent extension: SQL Server instances on Azure VMs get backed up into a storage account.
- Automatic VM guest patching
An Azure setting, using the AutomaticByPlatform patch mode, that applies Critical and Security updates to VMs off-peak while putting availability first.
- Autoregistration
When enabled on a private DNS zone's virtual network link, VMs in that VNet get A records created automatically, kept in step as their IPs change and removed when they are deleted. A VNet may autoregister into only one private zone.
- Availability set
Grouping that distributes VMs across as many as 3 fault domains and 20 update domains inside a single datacentre, backed by a 99.95% SLA. It offers neither autoscale nor zone distribution.
