A semantic model setting that prevents report builders from summarising columns straight in a visual, leaving explicit measures as the only option. Calculation groups need it switched on, since their calculation items only work with explicit measures.
Also called DiscourageImplicitMeasures.

Each book explains Discourage implicit measures in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- Semantic model
Sometimes called an OLAP model, this Power BI and Fabric layer defines the measures, hierarchies, tables and relationships that reports and dashboards query; star schema design is the usual pattern.
Related terms
- Implicit measure
A summary, such as Sum, Average or Count, that Power BI builds on its own when a column is dropped into a visual. Excel PivotTables and other MDX clients, as well as calculation groups, rely on explicit measures instead, and the Discourage implicit measures setting prevents them.
- Model explorer
Choosing Model at the top of the Data pane in Model view opens this outline of everything a semantic model contains, from its tables and measures to roles, perspectives and calculation groups. Settings that apply to the whole model, Discourage implicit measures among them, are changed here too.
