Lets business users ask about Unity Catalog data in everyday language within AI/BI. Each reply runs with the questioner's own permissions; authors shape its behaviour by supplying datasets, instructions, a knowledge store and example SQL.
Also called formerly Genie space, Genie space, Genie spaces.

Terms in this definition
- Unity Catalog
Azure Databricks' governance solution covering both data and AI in one place, with centralised permissions, auditing, data discovery and lineage.
- Agents (classic) API
First-generation Foundry Agent Service API, based on threads, messages and runs. It is deprecated, replaced by conversations and responses, and retires on 31 March 2027.
- AGDLP
Nesting pattern: users go into global groups, which go into domain local groups, which receive the permissions. AGUDLP adds universal groups for forests with several domains.
- Knowledge store
Property of an Azure AI Search skillset that uses projections to save enriched output into Azure Storage tables and blobs, so it can be analysed outside the search index.
- Serverless
Compute tier for single Azure SQL databases that scales automatically, pauses when idle and charges by the second. It is offered in General Purpose and Hyperscale, not Business Critical, and reserved capacity does not apply.
Related terms
- AI/BI dashboard
The current dashboard type in Azure Databricks: AI helps you author it, its data stays governed by Unity Catalog, and publishing adds a companion Genie Agent. The legacy SQL dashboards it replaced can no longer be opened.
- Genie
Genie Agents (once called Genie spaces) let Azure Databricks users ask about curated data in everyday language; Genie writes a read-only SQL query behind the scenes and shows what it finds, with charts.
- Trusted assets
Verified SQL functions from Unity Catalog and parameterised sample queries added to a Genie Agent. If Genie's answer uses one, it is labelled trusted.
