Speeds up queries that filter on certain columns by keeping those columns sorted, with pointers back to each row; the price is more storage and slower writes.

Terms in this definition
- FILTER
Returns just those rows of a table that meet a condition. In CALCULATE it handles conditions too complex for a Boolean filter argument, though a Boolean filter is faster whenever one will work.
- General-purpose v1
The older storage account kind (
Storage), which lacks access tiers, Archive and premium file shares and retires on 13 October 2026. Converting to ZRS requires first upgrading to GPv2, a one-way change.
Related terms
- Automatic index management
Lets the database add and remove indexes by itself to match the workload, through the
CREATE_INDEXandDROP_INDEXautomatic tuning options. You'll only find it in SQL database in Fabric and Azure SQL Database. - Azure ABAC
Attribute-based conditions added on top of Azure RBAC role assignments, such as granting access only to blobs carrying a certain index tag. Blobs (ADLS Gen2 included) and queues support them; Azure Files and Tables do not.
- Azure AI Search query key
Read-only API key used only to query the documents collection of an index; a service can hold up to 50. Every query key works across all indexes, and query keys are created or deleted rather than regenerated.
- Azure AI Search tool
Tool that lets an agent query an Azure AI Search index that already exists. You supply
project_connection_idandindex_name; by default it runsvector_semantic_hybridqueries and returns five results (top_k5). - Azure OpenAI On Your Data
Feature of Azure OpenAI, now deprecated, for grounding chat answers in your own content retrieved from a search index. Its replacement for new work is Foundry Agent Service paired with Azure AI Search or Foundry IQ.
- BRIN
Short for block range index, a PostgreSQL index that keeps a summary for each range of table blocks. It is compact and works well on very big tables where values track the physical order of rows, timestamps being a typical case.
- Deltastore
Where a columnstore index keeps small batches and trickle inserts, as B-tree delta rowgroups, until a rowgroup fills up at 1,048,576 rows and the tuple-mover compresses it.
- Field mappings
Indexer configuration passing a source field unchanged into an index field with another name or type. It is applied once documents are cracked and before any skillset runs.
