Starts a workload straight from a backup mounted to a host, getting it running within minutes, though slower until moved to production. Azure, Nutanix AHV, Hyper-V and vSphere are supported targets.

Each book explains Instant Recovery in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- Workload
Also called an experience: a Fabric toolset aimed at one job role, e.g. Data Factory, Data Engineering, Data Warehouse, Real-Time Intelligence or Power BI. Each keeps its data in OneLake.
- Nutanix AHV
The hypervisor from Nutanix. Veeam's integration backs up its VMs to repositories and can restore to it from backups of vSphere, Hyper-V, AHV and other platforms.
- Hyper-V
The hypervisor built into Windows. The VMs for the Azure Extended Network appliance require the Hyper-V role, using nested virtualisation, and an external virtual switch for each NIC.
- vSphere
VMware's platform for virtualisation, made up of vCenter and ESX hosts, supplying compute for VCF clusters.
Related terms
- Entire VM restore
Puts a complete VM back on production storage from a backup, optionally starting it on a chosen host, so performance is normal straight away. Compare Instant Recovery, which runs from the backup, and quick rollback, which writes only changed blocks.
- mount server
Where backup content is mounted for Instant Recovery, Scan Backup, Secure Restore and file or application item restores. One tied to a repository also runs its rescans, health checks and synthetic operations, else the backup server does.
- Quick Migration
A way to relocate VMs or their disks to other ESXi hosts or datastores, using vMotion or Storage vMotion when available and Veeam's own mechanism when not. It is also how an Instant Recovery gets completed.
- Veeam vPower NFS Service
Underpins vPower features such as SureBackup and Instant Recovery. It lets a mount server publish backup contents over NFS, presenting emulated virtual disks on a datastore that ESXi hosts can mount.
- VMkernel interface
An ESXi network interface used by the host's own services. To mount the vPower NFS datastore that Instant Recovery and virtual labs depend on, a host needs one with connectivity to the vPower NFS server.
