The hypervisor built into Windows. The VMs for the Azure Extended Network appliance require the Hyper-V role, using nested virtualisation, and an external virtual switch for each NIC.

Each book explains Hyper-V in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- Hypervisor
The virtualisation software allowing many isolated virtual machines to run on a single physical server. The cloud provider looks after it whichever service type is used.
- Virtual machines
Infrastructure-as-a-service compute giving complete control of the operating system, making it a fit for lift-and-shift moves and for software relying on OS-level pieces like COM.
- Azure Extended Network
Windows Admin Center feature letting migrated VMs keep their IP addresses by stretching an on-premises subnet into Azure; two appliance VMs carry a VXLAN tunnel between them, and up to 250 addresses can be extended.
- Role
How an actor normally or expectedly behaves, or the part a person takes in a process. A single actor may hold more than one role.
- Hyper-V virtual switch
A software switch in Hyper-V attached to a virtual or physical NIC. For the Extended Network appliance, each NIC needs its own external switch.
- NIC
Network interface card, the network interface of a VM; NSGs can be associated with it.
Related terms
- Azure Migrate appliance
Discovery VM run on premises and registered to exactly one Azure Migrate project; it is deployed from a Hyper-V VHD, a VMware OVA or an installer script, finds servers without agents and collects the performance data that assessments draw on.
- Azure Site Recovery Provider
Component installed on each Hyper-V host, or on the VMM server where one is used, which registers that server with a Recovery Services vault and manages replication.
- BIOS
Generation 2 Hyper-V machines use UEFI with Secure Boot; Generation 1 machines rely on this older firmware.
- Cluster Shared Volumes
Shared failover cluster storage that all nodes write to simultaneously, typically for Scale-Out File Server or Hyper-V. On SAN-backed storage, ReFS-formatted volumes work in redirected mode.
- CredSSP
Hyper-V can use it for live migrations instead of Kerberos constrained delegation; it works by delegating a user's entire credentials to the remote server.
- DHCP guard
A Hyper-V switch port option that discards DHCP server traffic coming from virtual machines that have no permission to hand out addresses.
- Discrete Device Assignment
A Hyper-V capability that hands an entire PCIe device, a graphics card or NVMe drive for example, directly to a single virtual machine.
- Dynamic Memory
A Hyper-V capability that gives a running virtual machine more or less memory as demand changes, staying within its configured startup, minimum and maximum amounts.
