Terms in this definition
- Power BI Desktop
A free Windows program where authors connect to sources, shape and model data, and design reports before publishing them to the Power BI service. Dashboards are not made here.
- Nonzonal
Describes a resource with no availability zone configuration. Azure can put it in any zone, so it may go offline if that zone fails.
- FORMAT
A DAX function that turns a value into text according to a format string, for instance "MMMM" to show a month's name. Since the output is text, numeric operations can't use it, and dynamic format strings were introduced to get around that.
- OS
Operating system, which you manage yourself on IaaS VMs. PaaS offerings like App Service do not expose it.
- Using locale
Changes a column's type in Power Query according to a named source culture; English (United Kingdom), for example, reads dates as day/month/year. Storing this choice in the query means results don't depend on each computer's regional settings.
Related terms
- Custom speech model expiration
What happens once a custom speech model expires: real-time endpoint calls drop back to the newest base model for that locale, whereas batch jobs naming the model fail with a 4xx error; the model itself remains.
- LCID
A locale ID: a number standing for a language (British English, for instance, is 2057). In full-text search it decides which stemmer and word breaker are applied to an indexed column or a query.
- SpeechTranslationConfig
Configuration object in the Speech SDK for translating speech: SpeechRecognitionLanguage defines the source locale, and each target language code is added through AddTargetLanguage.
- SSML voice element
Element in SSML that chooses, through its name attribute, which voice speaks the text inside it. Accent follows the voice's locale, so any two en-US voices sound alike in accent.
- Voices list API
A GET request in the text to speech REST API returning standard voices with their locale, gender and styles; the path is /cognitiveservices/voices/list on the regional tts endpoint or /tts/cognitiveservices/voices/list on the resource endpoint. No speech is synthesised.
