Measurement over time that VCF Operations gathers for an object, such as CPU usage. A policy turns collection of each one on or off, or lets it inherit the setting.

Each book explains metric in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- OVER
Gives a T-SQL window function its window: PARTITION BY, ORDER BY and, if wanted, a ROWS or RANGE frame. Rankings and running totals can then be worked out while every row is kept.
- VCF Operations
VCF's console for running the fleet. It covers alerting, monitoring, capacity, reporting, log analysis and licensing alongside fleet management of identity, passwords, certificates and lifecycle.
- CPU
The processor that runs a VM's workload (central processing unit); while B-series VMs run under their baseline, they accumulate CPU credits.
- total_tokens
The usage field that sums prompt_tokens and completion_tokens, for example 37 + 86 = 123. Billing applies to both kinds of token.
- Exclusions
Scopes taken out of a policy assignment; they can only narrow its coverage, never widen it.
Related terms
- Autoscale
Azure Monitor capability that adds or removes instances on a schedule or once a metric rule has been true for its full duration. The maximum instance count merely sets a ceiling and never triggers scaling itself.
- Azure OpenAI AvailabilityRate
Metric for Azure OpenAI calculated as total calls less server errors, divided by total calls; it reveals unavailability on the service side, meaning HTTP 5xx responses.
- Backlogged Input Events
Stream Analytics metric showing how many received input events are still waiting to be processed. If it never drops back to zero, the job is falling behind and should be given more streaming units.
- Business Attribute Profile
Expresses business goals and drivers as measurable requirements, each with a metric and a target in business language, instead of generic labels such as confidentiality, integrity and availability. It comes from the SABSA method.
- ChecksFailedPercent
One of the Connection Monitor metrics, together with
RoundTripTimeMsand Test Result, on which Azure Monitor metric alerts can trigger, for instance when a site-to-site VPN goes down. - Connections Active
Online endpoint metric in Azure Monitor showing how many client TCP connections are open at once.
- Cooldown
How long autoscale waits after scaling before any rule may act again, 5 minutes by default; this differs from the period over which the metric is evaluated.
- Data Path Availability
Metric reporting frontend (VIP) availability on a Standard Load Balancer; check it first when a VM behind the load balancer appears to be down.
