The set of screens Windows shows when a device is first switched on and set up. Windows Autopilot deployment profiles tailor these screens, and the Enrollment Status Page appears while they run.
Also called out-of-box experience.

Each book explains OOBE in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- Set
Secret permission in Key Vault for writing secrets; some older material refers to it as Create.
- FIRST
A DAX function available only inside visual calculations. It fetches the value at the start of one axis of the visual's matrix, which makes it handy for comparing each point with the first; its opposite is LAST.
- Windows Autopilot
A collection of technologies for setting up new Windows devices from the cloud so they arrive ready for work, with no need to reimage them.
- Model deployment
Inside a resource, each deployment is a named copy of a Foundry model with its own TPM quota and deployment type. Requests identify the model by this deployment name.
- Enrollment Status Page
A progress screen in OOBE and Windows Autopilot that follows network profiles, certificates, policies and apps as they install, first for the device and then for the user. It can stop the person using the device until certain apps have finished.
Related terms
- Autopilot deployment profile
Controls how the out-of-box experience runs on Windows Autopilot devices: which deployment mode and join type to use, and whether every targeted device should be converted to Autopilot. Up to 350 of these Intune profiles can exist in a tenant.
- Autopilot diagnostics page
If the Enrollment Status Page profile allows it, pressing Ctrl+Shift+D during Windows 11 OOBE opens this page. It shows what the deployment is doing and can export logs, one of which is a CSV with the hardware hash.
- Self-service join
When users join their own device to Microsoft Entra, either in OOBE or later via Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
- Technician flow
Autopilot pre-provisioning begins here. Pressing the Windows key five times at OOBE lets IT, an OEM or a reseller install device-targeted content, and Reseal then passes the PC on for the user stage.
- User-driven mode
An Autopilot mode where the person who will use the PC signs in at OOBE, after which it is Microsoft Entra joined or hybrid joined and enrolled in Intune.
- Windows Autopilot device preparation
With this newer Autopilot approach, selected apps and scripts install during OOBE. It is targeted at user groups, and enrollment time grouping places each PC in a static group that the Intune Provisioning Client owns.
- Windows settings backup and restore
Saves a user's Windows settings and list of Store apps, then puts them back during OOBE on a new Microsoft Entra joined PC. Enterprise State Roaming is now handled by it too.
