An inventory container for computers that Veeam Agents will protect, whether added individually, from Active Directory, from a CSV file, from the cloud or as pre-installed agents. It also carries the settings for discovering those computers and deploying agents to them.

Terms in this definition
- Container
Something that groups data. Blob Storage containers sit inside a storage account and hold blobs much as folders hold files; Cosmos DB containers hold items and set the scope for partitioning and throughput.
- RAMP
The approach used by the Cloud Adoption Framework's Manage methodology to structure cloud operations: teams, duties, processes and tools. It divides what the central platform handles from what each workload handles.
- AD
Short for Active Directory, the directory service built into Windows Server (AD DS). Entra Connect synchronises on-premises forests to Microsoft Entra ID.
- Cluster Shared Volumes
Shared failover cluster storage that all nodes write to simultaneously, typically for Scale-Out File Server or Hyper-V. On SAN-backed storage, ReFS-formatted volumes work in redirected mode.
Related terms
- cloud machine
A virtual machine in AWS (EC2) or Azure, Windows or Linux, that Veeam discovers via the provider's APIs. Protection comes from Veeam Agents, installed by means of a dedicated protection group.
- Database Availability Group
In Exchange, a group of mailbox servers clustered for high availability. A normal one is handled by Veeam Agent like a failover cluster; one without an IP address is covered by putting every node into a protection group.
- rescan job
A hidden job that appears once the first protection group exists. Following each group's schedule, by default every day at 9:00 PM, it finds computers and installs or upgrades Veeam Agents; groups of pre-installed agents are skipped.
- unmanaged computer
Any computer running a Veeam Agent independently of the backup server, for instance one sending its backups straight to a Veeam repository by itself. The console lists these in a predefined group called Unmanaged, from where they can be moved into a protection group of your choosing.
