Drops and recreates an index to clear fragmentation. Columnstore indexes also have every delta row pushed into compressed rowgroups during this operation.
Also called ALTER INDEX ... REBUILD.

Terms in this definition
- Index
Speeds up queries that filter on certain columns by keeping those columns sorted, with pointers back to each row; the price is more storage and slower writes.
Related terms
- Default Domain Policy
Linked at the domain's root, this GPO holds lockout, password and other account settings for the whole domain; dcgpofix can rebuild it.
- Identity column
Assigns a unique
BIGINTto every row inserted into a Delta table, though not always in an unbroken sequence; it is declared asGENERATED ALWAYS AS IDENTITYorGENERATED BY DEFAULT AS IDENTITY. Concurrent writes are disabled and a rebuild can change the numbers, so it suits append-only tables that no full refresh will ever touch. - Index transformation
The online rebuild Cosmos DB performs in place once an indexing policy is modified, drawing on spare RUs and giving way to CRUD operations.
- Optimal refresh
Turned on by default for materialized lake views, this setting chooses on every run between skipping, an incremental refresh and a full one. Source tables need Delta change data feed for incremental refresh to happen, and disabling the setting makes each run a full rebuild.
