Content with lasting business, legal or regulatory value is handled by this Microsoft Purview solution. Items become records when a retention label says so, and administrators also get file plans, event-triggered retention periods and disposal that is reviewed first and documented afterwards.

Terms in this definition
- Microsoft Purview
Family of Microsoft products for data governance, security and compliance. Its Data Map stores only metadata, such as lineage, schema and classification, never the data itself.
- Retention label
A Microsoft Purview label placed on a single file or message to control how long it is retained, when it is removed, or both; it can also mark the item as a record. Labels are made available through policies that either publish them for people to choose or apply them automatically.
- Get
Key Vault permission on secrets that allows a single secret to be read; App Service Key Vault references need nothing beyond it.
- FIRST
A DAX function available only inside visual calculations. It fetches the value at the start of one axis of the visual's matrix, which makes it handy for comparing each point with the first; its opposite is LAST.
Related terms
- Disposition review
A records management stage where designated reviewers look at content whose retention period has ended and decide whether to delete it for good or retain it for longer.
- File plan
A page in Microsoft Purview records management that lets administrators build and look after many retention labels at once, for instance by importing a retention schedule they already use from a spreadsheet.
- Policy lookup
A page in data lifecycle management and records management where you enter a user, site or Microsoft 365 group to see which retention policies and retention label policies cover it.
- Scope Manager
Lets an admin create, change and remove adaptive scopes and similar scoping features in Purview. Compliance Administrator and Records Management are among the role groups that hold it.
