A named set of GitHub rules for branches, tags or pushes, applied at repository or organisation level. Several can stack and each can be turned on or off, making them the modern replacement for branch protection rules.

Terms in this definition
- Set
Secret permission in Key Vault for writing secrets; some older material refers to it as Create.
- Image tagging
An Image Analysis feature producing single-word tags, each with a confidence score, for actions, scenery, objects and living things in an image.
- Repository
A group of images or artefacts in a container registry that share one name and differ by tag. Names can include slash-separated namespaces, but every repository is handled separately.
- Branch protection
Rules on a branch such as main (branch protection in GitHub, branch policies in Azure Repos) that stop people pushing to it directly and require reviewed pull requests for merges.

- Outbound endpoint
Endpoint of DNS Private Resolver, placed in a dedicated subnet, that forwards queries outside Azure as a forwarding ruleset directs. Having no listening IP, it cannot serve as a rule's destination.
- Push ruleset
A GitHub ruleset for private or internal repositories, applying across the entire fork network, that refuses pushes according to file path, path length, file extension or file size.
