In OpenSharing, the container you fill with tables, views, volumes, models and notebooks for recipients. You need CREATE SHARE on the metastore to make one; add a schema and all its assets, including later ones, go with history.

Each book explains Share in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- OpenSharing
An open protocol and platform from Azure Databricks for sharing data and AI assets securely, whether with another metastore (Databricks-to-Databricks) or with recipients who don't use Databricks (open sharing).
- Container
Something that groups data. Blob Storage containers sit inside a storage account and hold blobs much as folders hold files; Cosmos DB containers hold items and set the scope for partitioning and throughput.
- CRUD
Shorthand for create, read, update and delete, the four basic things you do with data. Data-plane roles in Azure Cosmos DB, for instance, authorise those operations on items.
- Metastore
The highest-level Unity Catalog container, holding metadata and permissions for a single cloud region. Each region has only one, which every workspace in that region shares, and it is not meant to be the usual boundary for isolating data.
- Architecture Definition Document
A key deliverable bringing together the main architecture artifacts across the four domains for every relevant state: baseline, transition and target. It sets out, in qualitative terms, what the architect intends.
- Schema
The middle part of a Unity Catalog name (
catalog.schema.table), grouping tables, views, volumes, functions and models inside a catalog. A grant on it covers everything in it now and later, and nothing inside can be reached withoutUSE SCHEMA. - ALL
A DAX function that ignores any filters and gives back every row of a table or every value of the named columns. Used within CALCULATE, it works as a modifier that clears filters, although REMOVEFILTERS states that intent more clearly where it is available.
Related terms
- Access-based enumeration
When turned on for an SMB share or a DFS namespace, users only see the files, folders and links they're allowed to read; everything else is hidden from them.
- Accuracy (classification metric)
Overall measure for a classification model: the share of all test cases it predicts correctly.
- Active committer
How GHAS for Azure DevOps is charged. Each person counts once if they've pushed to any repository with it switched on within 90 days, even when several organisations share one Azure subscription.
- Allow gateway transit
Peering option set on the hub, which owns the gateway, so that peered VNets can share its ExpressRoute or VPN gateway. The spoke sets Use remote gateways to match; on a VNet lacking a gateway the option has no effect.
- Authoritative upload
Option for an Azure File Sync server endpoint pre-seeded with the share's data, letting the server's files overwrite the cloud copy on upload.
- Azure Backup reports
Reporting for Azure Backup, fed by diagnostic settings on each vault. Log Analytics workspaces receiving the data may be in any region, whereas a storage account target has to share the vault's region.
- Azure Files backup
Azure Backup for file shares, using a Recovery Services vault that must share the storage account's region. Schedules are either daily or hourly; hourly ones repeat every 4, 6, 8 or 12 hours, with 1 and 2 added in newer policies.
- Azure Files OAuth over REST
Capability allowing Microsoft Entra users, groups and managed identities to use OAuth tokens against the FileREST data API. The roles that grant it carry
readFileBackupSemanticsorwriteFileBackupSemantics; the SMB share roles don't apply.
