Terms in this definition
- Custom detection
Microsoft now suggests these Defender XDR rules when creating new detections for Sentinel or Defender XDR. Each is built on an advanced hunting query, runs periodically or in near real time (NRT), raises alerts and may take response actions.
- Intune
Microsoft's device management service, once branded Microsoft Endpoint Manager. Its compliance policies are what the compliant-device grant in Conditional Access relies on.
- Win32 app
Windows installers wrapped up as .intunewin files; Intune deploys them and its Management Extension handles installation.
- App protection policy
A set of Intune rules on managed apps that safeguards organisational data, for example by demanding a PIN or preventing copy-paste and save-as into personal apps. It works whether or not the device is enrolled.

- ContainerLogV2
Table in Log Analytics holding the stdout and stderr output that Container insights collects from containers, with columns including PodNamespace, PodName and ContainerName. Its predecessor, ContainerLog, lost support on 30 September 2026 and no longer receives data.
- Detection rules
How Intune decides if a Win32 app is installed already, using an MSI check, a file, a registry value or a custom script. A script only counts the app as present if it ends with exit code 0 and outputs something to STDOUT.
- Driver logs
Standard output, standard error and Log4j output from the driver,
printstatements included. Secrets are not redacted from them, so by default access is restricted. - stdio
A way for MCP to work locally: the client launches the server as a process and they communicate via stdin and stdout. Data API builder's SQL MCP Server can run like this.
