Veeam's recoverability check: machines are started from their backups inside an isolated virtual lab and their applications are tested to confirm they work. The check itself is carried out by a SureBackup job.

Terms in this definition
- virtual lab
A sandboxed environment that copies production networking while being kept separate from it. SureBackup, SureReplica, On-Demand Sandbox and staged restore all start their machines inside one.
- Job
A sequence of steps executed together on one agent or runner, or on the server for agentless work. While running, each occupies one of your parallel jobs.
Related terms
- 3-2-1 rule
A guideline for keeping backups safe: hold three copies of your data (the live data and two backups) on two kinds of storage, and keep one of them away from the main site. Veeam's best practice adds an immutable or offline copy and zero errors, confirmed with SureBackup, giving 3-2-1-1-0.
- application group
SureBackup starts these supporting machines, such as DNS, DHCP or a domain controller, in the virtual lab before the machine being tested, so that it has what it needs to run.
- AVHDX
Hyper-V keeps changes in these differencing-disk files. While a production checkpoint is active, writes go to temporary ones; SureBackup also uses one so the machine it tests never modifies the backup.
- troubleshooting mode
A way of starting a SureBackup job so that a machine failing verification stays running in the virtual lab, together with its application group, until you stop the session. It helps with investigating lab connectivity and adjusting timeouts.
- Veeam vPower NFS Service
Underpins vPower features such as SureBackup and Instant Recovery. It lets a mount server publish backup contents over NFS, presenting emulated virtual disks on a datastore that ESXi hosts can mount.
- YARA
A rule language for recognising malware by pattern. Veeam can apply such rules to restore points during Scan Backup, Secure Restore and SureBackup, flagging affected workloads as Infected.
