A sandboxed environment that copies production networking while being kept separate from it. SureBackup, SureReplica, On-Demand Sandbox and staged restore all start their machines inside one.

Each book explains virtual lab in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- Azure Machine Learning environment
Versioned asset that pairs a Docker image with a pip or conda specification, so every job or deployment using it gets identical dependencies. You point to it by name plus a version number, or by name with @latest.
- SureBackup
Veeam's recoverability check: machines are started from their backups inside an isolated virtual lab and their applications are tested to confirm they work. The check itself is carried out by a SureBackup job.
- SureReplica
Extends SureBackup-style verification to vSphere replicas, CDP ones included. A chosen replica restore point boots inside a virtual lab, goes through identical tests and gets reported on, while production carries on undisturbed.
- On-Demand Sandbox
An isolated virtual lab for training, patch testing or troubleshooting, where VMs run from storage snapshots, replicas or backups. Changes go to redo logs, and it is not a recoverability test.
- staged restore
Restoring a whole VM in two steps: it is first booted from backup inside a virtual lab where a script runs, for instance to strip out personal or sensitive information, and only afterwards does the altered VM go back to production.
- ALL
A DAX function that ignores any filters and gives back every row of a table or every value of the named columns. Used within CALCULATE, it works as a modifier that clears filters, although REMOVEFILTERS states that intent more clearly where it is available.
Related terms
- application group
SureBackup starts these supporting machines, such as DNS, DHCP or a domain controller, in the virtual lab before the machine being tested, so that it has what it needs to run.
- IP masquerading
A virtual lab addressing method that gives every lab machine a masquerade address similar to its production one (172.16.1.13 might become 172.18.1.13), which production systems use to reach it.
- isolated network
A fenced-off replica of a production network within a virtual lab, so verified machines can run without clashing. Up to 9 per lab.
- proxy appliance
A helper Linux VM placed on the virtual lab host with links into production and into each isolated network. Routing and masquerading through it let the backup server talk to machines running inside the lab.
- static IP mapping
A virtual lab option that hands an unused address on the production network, called the access IP, to a VM running in isolation. Production clients then reach that VM with no routing changes.
- troubleshooting mode
A way of starting a SureBackup job so that a machine failing verification stays running in the virtual lab, together with its application group, until you stop the session. It helps with investigating lab connectivity and adjusting timeouts.
