Combination of a management domain with any number of workload domains, each instance having its own NSX, SDDC Manager and vCenters. A VCF fleet is made up of one or more of them.

Each book explains VCF Instance in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- management domain
VCF domain built by the VCF Installer to host a VCF Instance's management components, plus fleet-wide components such as VCF Operations and VCF Automation in the first instance. Business workloads may run there too.
- Workload
Also called an experience: a Fabric toolset aimed at one job role, e.g. Data Factory, Data Engineering, Data Warehouse, Real-Time Intelligence or Power BI. Each keeps its data in OneLake.
- HAVING
Applies a condition to groups produced by GROUP BY, often on an aggregate such as SUM(). WHERE works earlier, on individual rows before they are grouped.
- NSX
Software that handles networking and security across VCF, covering firewalling, load balancing, NAT, VPCs, overlay segments and Tier-0/1 gateways.
- SDDC Manager
Per-instance VCF appliance that automates jobs such as workload domain deployment, lifecycle of ESX, NSX and vCenter, importing vCenter, stretching clusters, and handling passwords and certificates. VCF 9.0 positions it within VCF Operations, whose console is replacing its separate UI.
- VCF fleet
Everything that a single VCF Operations instance manages: its VCF Instances, possibly some standalone vCenters, and fleet-wide shared services like VCF Automation.
Related terms
- lookup_passwords
SDDC Manager shell command printing credentials for built-in accounts under its control in a VCF Instance; GET /v1/credentials gives the same via API.
- unified cloud proxy
Cloud proxy for VCF Operations that also handles log forwarding (to the logs add-on) and Log Assist. Each VCF Instance gets one by default when deployed by the installer.
- VCF domain
A single vCenter together with the storage, switching, NSX Manager and clusters it controls. Every VCF Instance has one for management, plus optional extra ones for workloads.
- VCF Installer
Successor to Cloud Builder: either converges an existing vSphere environment into VCF or deploys from scratch a new VCF Instance or fleet, with its management domain and core components.
- VMware Cloud Foundation account
Cloud account, or adapter, in VCF Operations for monitoring VCF objects like workload and management domains. Its name comes from the VCF Instance name given in the VCF Installer.
