Because Microsoft runs this gateway, there's no software to set up: it is placed in a delegated subnet of your Azure virtual network. Services such as Power BI, mirroring and pipelines can then connect through it to data sources that are only reachable inside that network.
Also called virtual network data gateway.

Each book explains VNet data gateway in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- Agents (classic) API
First-generation Foundry Agent Service API, based on threads, messages and runs. It is deprecated, replaced by conversations and responses, and retires on 31 March 2027.
- Set
Secret permission in Key Vault for writing secrets; some older material refers to it as Create.
- Subnet
A segment of a VNet's address space from which resources receive private IPs. Azure holds back five addresses per subnet (the first four and the last), leaving 251 usable in a /24 and three in a /29, the smallest IPv4 subnet.
- VNet
A private network belonging to a single subscription and region and covering all of that region's availability zones. A VM can only use a VNet located in the same region.
- Power BI
Microsoft's analytics and reporting service. It reaches data held on-premises through the on-premises data gateway.
- Mirroring
A way of keeping a copy of an outside database, for example Azure SQL Database, Cosmos DB or Snowflake, continuously up to date in OneLake as Delta tables inside a mirrored database. You query it in T-SQL via its SQL analytics endpoint, and the replication compute costs nothing.
- CONNECT
In SQL Server, the right to open a connection to a database. Fabric's equivalent is Read permission on an item, which allows connecting to a warehouse or SQL endpoint but not querying anything in it.
