Domain in VCF for business applications. It gets a dedicated vCenter and NSX that may be dedicated or shared; the management components live separately in the management domain.
Also called VI workload domain.

Terms in this definition
- Domain
A way of grouping workspaces by area of the business, in support of a data mesh approach. Items take on their workspace's domain, letting you filter the OneLake catalog by it, and certain tenant settings can be passed to domain admins; domains have no effect on access permissions.
- VMware Cloud Foundation
Broadcom's platform for private cloud. It unifies management of NSX, vSAN, vSphere, VCF Automation and VCF Operations as one fleet; VVF, by contrast, lacks automation and cloud management.
- Dedicated
Running Azure Functions on an App Service plan, which removes the execution time limit and offers VNet integration on Basic and higher tiers.
- vCenter
Management software for VMs, clusters and ESX hosts. Each domain in VCF gets a dedicated one.
- NSX
Software that handles networking and security across VCF, covering firewalling, load balancing, NAT, VPCs, overlay segments and Tier-0/1 gateways.
- management domain
VCF domain built by the VCF Installer to host a VCF Instance's management components, plus fleet-wide components such as VCF Operations and VCF Automation in the first instance. Business workloads may run there too.
Related terms
- NSX Edge cluster
Pool of Edge nodes that runs centralised gateway services, for example VPN, NAT, load balancing and north-south routing. VCF adds it to a workload domain after that domain has been built.
- SDDC Manager
Per-instance VCF appliance that automates jobs such as workload domain deployment, lifecycle of ESX, NSX and vCenter, importing vCenter, stretching clusters, and handling passwords and certificates. VCF 9.0 positions it within VCF Operations, whose console is replacing its separate UI.
