Sends every row change in a stream group's tables to Fabric Eventstream or Azure Event Hubs, each as a CloudEvent. It's in preview for SQL database in Fabric, Managed Instance, Azure SQL Database and SQL Server 2025; delivery over AMQP was deprecated on 15 August 2026, with Kafka the recommended route.
Also called change event streaming.

Terms in this definition
- Stream group
Made with sys.sp_create_event_stream_group, this change event streaming object says where changes go (Fabric Eventstream or Azure Event Hubs) and which tables are included, along with the credential, message size and partitioning.
- Fabric Eventstream
A Real-Time Intelligence item in Fabric that takes in events as they happen, can reshape them with no code, and sends them on to destinations. SQL change event streaming is one way to feed it row changes.
- Azure Event Hubs
Azure service for ingesting telemetry at high volume over HTTPS or AMQP; diagnostic settings can send data to it.
- SQL database in Fabric
Microsoft Fabric's transactional database, running Azure SQL Database's engine with self-tuning built in. Data lands in OneLake almost immediately, where a SQL analytics endpoint makes it queryable.
- Azure SQL Database
Platform-as-a-service database offered as a single database or in an elastic pool, sized up to 4 TB or 128 TB on Hyperscale. SQL Agent, CLR and queries across databases aren't available.
- SQL Server 2025
This SQL Server version brings AI into the engine itself: a vector type with vector indexes, external models, and AI_GENERATE_EMBEDDINGS. Native json and regular expression functions arrived with it too.
- OVER
Gives a T-SQL window function its window: PARTITION BY, ORDER BY and, if wanted, a ROWS or RANGE frame. Rankings and running totals can then be worked out while every row is kept.
- AMQP
Short for Advanced Message Queuing Protocol; Service Bus and Event Hubs accept it as well as HTTPS.
Related terms
- Azure Event Hubs Data Sender
Lets a principal send events to an event hub. For change event streaming, the database's managed identity should get this built-in role scoped to the event hub itself, not to its namespace.
