Repository in vCenter holding items such as templates, ISOs and OVF/OVA packages; one vCenter publishes it and others subscribe. VCF Automation shares images this way as well.

Each book explains Content library in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- Repository
A group of images or artefacts in a container registry that share one name and differ by tag. Names can include slash-separated namespaces, but every repository is handled separately.
- vCenter
Management software for VMs, clusters and ESX hosts. Each domain in VCF gets a dedicated one.
- VCF Automation
Self-service platform in VCF for provisioning VM, Kubernetes and AI workloads. Providers manage regions and tenants in one portal, while tenants handle projects and consumption in theirs.
- Shares
A relative weighting for dividing a contended resource such as memory, CPU, network bandwidth or disk I/O: double the shares earns double the entitlement. Reservations, by contrast, are guarantees and limits are ceilings.
Related terms
- Check out and check in
How a content library versions VM templates. Checking out produces a VM you can edit from the template; checking it back in, once the VM is suspended or powered off, stores it as the template's next version.
- Content Library Administrator
Delegating library management is documented as granting this sample vCenter role, which carries every content library privilege, as a global permission.
- local library
A content library that lives on, and originates content from, one vCenter. Once published, libraries on other vCenter instances can subscribe and sync.
- OVF default security policy
Applied to a content library, this policy checks each OVA or OVF item against the certificate it was signed with.
- Supervisor images content library
A subscribed content library that pulls Supervisor Kubernetes releases from Broadcom's feed, or from a local mirror where there is no internet access. From 9.0 this lets Supervisor releases arrive separately from vCenter updates.
