A DDL (Data Definition Language) statement that deletes a database object like a table. Once a table is dropped, its rows are gone unless a backup exists.

Terms in this definition
- DDL
Data Definition Language, the SQL statements CREATE, ALTER, DROP and RENAME, used to make, change and delete database objects like tables and views.
- Schema
The middle part of a Unity Catalog name (
catalog.schema.table), grouping tables, views, volumes, functions and models inside a catalog. A grant on it covers everything in it now and later, and nothing inside can be reached withoutUSE SCHEMA. - LIKE
Compares strings with a pattern that can contain the % and _ wildcards. Because it only understands character patterns, searching big volumes of text this way is much slower than using full-text search.
- Event
Table in Log Analytics where entries from Windows event logs are kept.
Related terms
- actionOnUnmanage
Controls what a deployment stack does with resources that drop out of its template: detach them or delete them. The delete option takes over from complete deployment mode, which is on the way to deprecation.
- Automatic index management
Lets the database add and remove indexes by itself to match the workload, through the
CREATE_INDEXandDROP_INDEXautomatic tuning options. You'll only find it in SQL database in Fabric and Azure SQL Database. - Custom speech model expiration
What happens once a custom speech model expires: real-time endpoint calls drop back to the newest base model for that locale, whereas batch jobs naming the model fail with a 4xx error; the model itself remains.
- DDL trigger
A trigger that responds to server or database events like CREATE, ALTER, DROP, GRANT, DENY or REVOKE. It is commonly used to record or prevent changes to the schema.
- External table
Also known as an unmanaged table, this is a table kept at a storage path you choose inside an external location. Unity Catalog controls who can reach it but not the lifecycle of its files, so a
DROPdeletes the metadata and leaves the data in place. - FIRSTDATE
Given a date column or a calendar, this DAX time intelligence function returns the earliest date visible in context. Because the result is a single-row table, you can drop it in anywhere a date is expected.
- Ingestion rules
Threat intelligence rules that drop or modify objects as they arrive and before they're saved, such as discarding indicators with low confidence or lengthening how long they stay valid.
- MANAGE
A Unity Catalog privilege allowing a principal to grant and revoke access on an object, hand over its ownership and drop it, all without being the owner. It gives no data access by itself and is not part of
ALL PRIVILEGES.
