Each book explains EVALUATE in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- DAX query
A query against a semantic model that returns a table, comparable to a T-SQL SELECT. It is written with
EVALUATE, optionally preceded byDEFINEfor query-only measures and variables and followed byORDER BY, and it doesn't alter the model. - Event
Table in Log Analytics where entries from Windows event logs are kept.
- DEFINE
An optional keyword at the start of a DAX query, placed before the first EVALUATE, for declaring things such as measures and variables that exist only for that query. A measure declared this way replaces a model measure with the same name just while the query runs.
- ORDER BY
Sorts what a SQL query returns on one or more columns. Leave it out and rows arrive in no guaranteed sequence.
Related terms
- DAX query view
Desktop's workspace for typing and running DAX queries (EVALUATE, DEFINE), also offered in the service as Write DAX queries. Copilot can help write them, and measures you create in a query can be pushed into the model with Update model with changes.
- Fabric trial capacity
Lets an organisation evaluate almost all Fabric workloads at no cost for 60 days, sized at F4 or F64. Once over, items that aren't Power BI content are kept for a week, giving time to move the workspace onto paid F or P capacity.
- IRAP
Australia's Information Security Registered Assessors Program. Approved assessors use it to evaluate cloud services that government bodies want to use, and Microsoft's assessment reports can be downloaded from the Service Trust Portal.
- Microsoft Foundry project
Boundary for development within a Foundry resource, where teams build and evaluate generative AI apps and agents.
- Prometheus alert
Defined inside Prometheus rule groups, this Azure Monitor rule uses PromQL to evaluate metrics stored by the managed Prometheus service.
- TABLETRAITS
Diagnoses Direct Lake fallback: EVALUATE TABLETRAITS () lists, per table, a DirectLakeFallbackInfo reason explaining any switch to DirectQuery, while None confirms Direct Lake is being used.
