A Cosmos DB container setting that decides which paths get indexed and by which index types. Every property is indexed by default, so leaving out paths that are never queried cuts the RU cost of writes.

Terms in this definition
- Cosmos DB
NoSQL database distributed globally, offering writes in multiple regions, automatic indexing and latency below 10 ms.
- Container
Something that groups data. Blob Storage containers sit inside a storage account and hold blobs much as folders hold files; Cosmos DB containers hold items and set the scope for partitioning and throughput.
- Get
Key Vault permission on secrets that allows a single secret to be read; App Service Key Vault references need nothing beyond it.
- Index
Speeds up queries that filter on certain columns by keeping those columns sorted, with pointers back to each row; the price is more storage and slower writes.
- property
In VCF Operations, an attribute describing how an object is configured, such as its vCPU count. Unlike a metric, it captures state rather than performance over time, and it can feed symptom definitions, views, dashboards and reports.
Related terms
- Automatic indexing
By default, Azure Cosmos DB indexes all properties of all items in a container, so you don't need to define a schema or maintain secondary indexes yourself. Paths can be left out through an indexing policy.
- Full-text policy
Declares, for a Cosmos DB for NoSQL container, the language and paths of its text fields. Combined with a full-text index defined in the indexing policy, this lets hybrid and full-text searches run efficiently.
- Index transformation
The online rebuild Cosmos DB performs in place once an indexing policy is modified, drawing on spare RUs and giving way to CRUD operations.
- Vector index
An entry in a Cosmos DB indexing policy, of type flat, quantizedFlat or diskANN, that makes VectorDistance searches faster. It can't be changed once created and needs the vector search feature turned on.
