Each book explains Maintenance configuration in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- CRUD
Shorthand for create, read, update and delete, the four basic things you do with data. Data-plane roles in Azure Cosmos DB, for instance, authorise those operations on items.
- Table options
Set only at creation with
OPTIONS, these key-value storage settings can't be altered or dropped afterwards; on Delta tables they also show up among the table properties. - Azure Update Manager
Azure's patching service: it assesses which OS updates Azure VMs and Arc-enabled servers are missing and installs them, whether right away or within scheduled maintenance windows.
- Scope
Where an access or policy assignment takes effect. It can be set on a single resource, a resource group, a subscription or a management group, and settings flow down from higher levels.
- Virtual machines
Infrastructure-as-a-service compute giving complete control of the operating system, making it a fit for lift-and-shift moves and for software relying on OS-level pieces like COM.
Related terms
- Dynamic scope
Instead of a fixed machine list, an Azure Update Manager maintenance configuration can select machines by tag, OS, region or resource group, worked out each time it runs.
- New-AzConfigurationAssignment
Cmdlet from Az.Maintenance that links a maintenance configuration, such as a patching schedule, to a VM, scale set or dedicated host. No software is installed by it.
- Scheduled patching
Lets Azure Update Manager apply updates to Arc-enabled servers and Azure VMs inside a window that a maintenance configuration defines.
