Each book explains Physical in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- Logical
Independent of any implementation. Each logical design is made real through a physical counterpart.
Related terms
- Abstraction levels
Four layers that make an architecture easier to talk about: Contextual answers why, Conceptual what, Logical how and Physical with what. Every level spans all four architecture domains.
- Availability zones
Separate physical datacentre locations inside one region. Placing VMs in at least two of them earns a 99.99% SLA.
- BareMetal Infrastructure
Azure offering of dedicated physical servers, SAP HANA Large Instances being one example, linked to your network over ExpressRoute.
- BRIN
Short for block range index, a PostgreSQL index that keeps a summary for each range of table blocks. It is compact and works well on very big tables where values track the physical order of rows, timestamps being a typical case.
- Column mapping
A Delta table feature that separates the logical names of columns from their physical names, so columns can be renamed or dropped as a metadata-only change and names may contain characters like spaces.
- Data Architecture
Covered in Phase C, it sets out how an enterprise's main data types and sources are organised, along with its logical and physical data assets and the resources used to manage data.
- Data Box
Physical device shipped for moving large amounts of data into Azure offline; Data Box Gateway uploads in one direction only, and neither offers continuous synchronisation.
- Dedicated host groups
Collections of physical dedicated hosts that live in one availability zone each, so covering several zones requires a separate group per zone.
