A Fabric item permission, comparable to db_datareader, that allows T-SQL reads of all tables and views in a warehouse or SQL analytics endpoint. With only Read, a user can connect but not query.
Also called Read all data using SQL.

Terms in this definition
- T-SQL
The dialect of SQL that Microsoft uses for Azure SQL and SQL Server. Azure Monitor logs are queried with KQL instead.
- ALL
A DAX function that ignores any filters and gives back every row of a table or every value of the named columns. Used within CALCULATE, it works as a modifier that clears filters, although REMOVEFILTERS states that intent more clearly where it is available.
- Warehouse
Fabric item offering complete T-SQL support (DML, DDL, multi-table transactions) over Delta tables held in OneLake; lakehouse SQL analytics endpoints, by contrast, are read-only.
- SQL analytics endpoint
Read-only SQL access in Fabric to the data in a lakehouse. Power BI using DirectQuery through it performs more slowly than Direct Lake.
- CRUD
Shorthand for create, read, update and delete, the four basic things you do with data. Data-plane roles in Azure Cosmos DB, for instance, authorise those operations on items.
- Chat message roles
Labels on chat messages: instructions go under system, the person's input under user, the model's previous answers under assistant, and results returned by a called tool under tool (or function).
- CONNECT
In SQL Server, the right to open a connection to a database. Fabric's equivalent is Read permission on an item, which allows connecting to a warehouse or SQL endpoint but not querying anything in it.
Related terms
- Item permissions
Rights granted on one particular Fabric item, through sharing or the Manage permissions page, that can stand alone or add to whatever workspace role a person holds. Read, ReadData, ReadAll, Write and Reshare are typical examples.
- Item sharing
Giving someone permissions on one Fabric item, Read by default with extras like ReadData, ReadAll or Build, without opening up the rest of the workspace to them.
- ReadAll
Grants access to lakehouse or warehouse data through Spark, OneLake APIs and the explorer pane. Querying with T-SQL is a separate permission, ReadData.
