Each book explains recovery location in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- WHERE
Limits a SELECT, UPDATE or DELETE to just the rows meeting a condition. Omit it, and the statement hits every row.
- Orchestrator
Software, Kubernetes being an example, that looks after large numbers of containers throughout their life by scheduling, scaling, repairing and updating them.
- vSphere
VMware's platform for virtualisation, made up of vCenter and ESX hosts, supplying compute for VCF clusters.
- Hyper-V
The hypervisor built into Windows. The VMs for the Azure Extended Network appliance require the Hyper-V role, using nested virtualisation, and an external virtual switch for each NIC.
- General-purpose v1
The older storage account kind (
Storage), which lacks access tiers, Archive and premium file shares and retires on 13 October 2026. Converting to ZRS requires first upgrading to GPv2, a one-way change.
Related terms
- Azure proxy appliance
Moves VM data into Azure while a cloud plan is restoring machines. Orchestrator picks one automatically; to force a particular appliance, name it under Cloud proxy in the Azure recovery location.
- Azure VM configuration
A pairing of VM series and disk type that Orchestrator applies when building VMs for a cloud plan restore. You define these on an Azure recovery location, three at most.
- backup file preference
A setting on a recovery location that chooses the source backups for a restore: Automatic (the latest restore point), Primary, Backup Copy or SOBR Capacity Tier. Failback ignores it.
- datastore capacity level
A limit configured in the storage settings of a vSphere recovery location that target datastores are not allowed to exceed while machines are recovered.
- EUAP
Azure's preview regions. An Azure recovery location cannot use one of these as its region.
- Full restore to target storage
Used when restore plans are tested in a DataLab, this option adds a check on the recovery location itself: is it reachable, and does it have the capacity to run the machines? The quicker alternative relies on Instant VM Recovery alone.
- Instant VM Recovery
A capability of Veeam Backup & Replication that boots a machine straight from backup files, shortening recovery time. Orchestrator relies on it for quick DataLab tests of restore plans and in any recovery location where it is switched on.
- Original VM Location
A ready-made vSphere recovery location that works out where each processed VM originally lived and puts it back there. It is only for vSphere VM backups, and you cannot change its resources.
