- ACE
Power Query relies on this OLE DB provider to open Access files and older .xls or .xlsb Excel workbooks. Cloud services cannot have it installed, so scheduled refresh of such files goes through a gateway on a machine where ACE is present.
- Active-active
A VPN gateway set-up where traffic flows through both instances simultaneously, each having a separate tunnel and public IP. Servicing one instance therefore disrupts connections less than under default active-standby.
- Active-active VPN gateway
Configuration where tunnels run on both gateway instances, and each instance has a Standard static public IP of its own. Azure Route Server branch-to-branch transit needs this mode plus ASN 65515.
- Active Standby
An NSX gateway HA mode where one Edge node handles traffic while a second waits to take over. Stateful services such as NAT, VPN, load balancing and the stateful firewall depend on it, and VCF Automation 9.0 expects its Tier-0 to be set up this way.
- Adaptive scope
A dynamic way to target Microsoft Purview retention, auto-labelling or communication compliance policies, where a query on attributes such as department selects the users, groups or sites and is re-run every day. A static scope is the fixed alternative.
- Additional context (Authenticator)
Microsoft Authenticator option that enriches push and passwordless prompts with where the sign-in is coming from geographically and which application asked for it.
- afdverify
Verification CNAME in Front Door (classic), mapping afdverify.<host> to afdverify.<name>.azurefd.net, which proves ownership of a custom domain while live traffic stays where it is.
- Affordance (prompting)
Prompting approach where the model is offered callable tools or functions, letting it pass tasks like calculations or lookups to code rather than guess the answer.
