Each book explains segment in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- L2
Layer 2 of the OSI model, the data link layer of frames, VLANs and MACs. An NSX segment is one broadcast domain at this layer.
- NSX
Software that handles networking and security across VCF, covering firewalling, load balancing, NAT, VPCs, overlay segments and Tier-0/1 gateways.
- Physical
Describes the concrete, real-world parts that put a logical architecture into effect.
- VLAN
Layer 2 broadcast domain tagged using 802.1Q. In VCF they carry TEP, vSAN, vMotion and management traffic, and NSX can back segments with them.
Related terms
- Architecture Landscape
Captures, for chosen moments, what the enterprise relies on today or intends to adopt, arranged into Strategic, Segment and Capability levels.
- ARP
Finds which MAC address belongs to an IPv4 address on the local segment.
- DHCP relay agent
A device, either a router or a server, that picks up DHCP broadcasts on its local network segment and passes them to a DHCP server elsewhere.
- Diarization
Splitting a transcript by voice so each segment shows which speaker was talking. Speech and the Content Understanding audio analyzers both offer it.
- enableSegment
Content Understanding analyzer option that divides a file into segments, assigns each one to a category from contentCategories and can hand each segment to a different analyzer.
- INFO.STORAGETABLECOLUMNSEGMENTS
A DAX INFO function returning storage details for each segment of a semantic model, like row counts, sizes and whether the segment is loaded in memory. It works only in DAX queries and only for users with write permission.
- Subnet
A segment of a VNet's address space from which resources receive private IPs. Azure holds back five addresses per subnet (the first four and the last), leaving 251 usable in a /24 and three in a /29, the smallest IPv4 subnet.
- transport zone
Decides in NSX which VMs may attach to a given segment, by defining the Edge and host nodes it spans; every one is either VLAN or overlay type.
