Layer 2 broadcast domain tagged using 802.1Q. In VCF they carry TEP, vSAN, vMotion and management traffic, and NSX can back segments with them.
Also called virtual LAN.

Terms in this definition
- L2
Layer 2 of the OSI model, the data link layer of frames, VLANs and MACs. An NSX segment is one broadcast domain at this layer.
- Domain
A way of grouping workspaces by area of the business, in support of a data mesh approach. Items take on their workspace's domain, letting you filter the OneLake catalog by it, and certain tenant settings can be passed to domain admins; domains have no effect on access permissions.
- VMware Cloud Foundation
Broadcom's platform for private cloud. It unifies management of NSX, vSAN, vSphere, VCF Automation and VCF Operations as one fleet; VVF, by contrast, lacks automation and cloud management.
- TEP
Short for tunnel endpoint: the interface on an NSX Edge node or ESX host where Geneve overlay tunnels begin and end. Addresses can be static, from DHCP or from an IP pool.
- vSAN
VMware's software-defined storage, which combines local devices across a cluster's ESX hosts into one shared datastore. Available as OSA or ESA, VCF can use it as principal storage.
- vMotion
Moves a running VM to another host with no downtime; its storage counterpart, Storage vMotion, relocates the files between datastores instead.
- NSX
Software that handles networking and security across VCF, covering firewalling, load balancing, NAT, VPCs, overlay segments and Tier-0/1 gateways.
Related terms
- segment
A layer 2 network in NSX for VM connections. Overlay-backed ones carry traffic in tunnels between TEPs; VLAN-backed ones correspond to a physical VLAN.
- transport zone
Decides in NSX which VMs may attach to a given segment, by defining the Edge and host nodes it spans; every one is either VLAN or overlay type.
- uplink profile
NSX settings applied to Edge and host transport nodes covering MTU, transport VLAN, teaming policy and which uplinks are active or standby.
