Placed directly on a Power BI report page, this filter control narrows the other visuals on that page; it can appear as buttons, a list, a drop-down or a date range.

Terms in this definition
- Power BI report
A set of one or more pages of interactive visuals, all drawing on a single semantic model, usually designed in Power BI Desktop (the service can also build them with a smaller feature set) and then published to a workspace.
- FILTER
Returns just those rows of a table that meet a condition. In CALCULATE it handles conditions too complex for a Boolean filter argument, though a Boolean filter is faster whenever one will work.
- CONTROL
Granting this on a securable gives all other permissions on it too, making it the most powerful SQL permission. At database scope that includes UNMASK and ALTER ANY MASK. Warehouse access through the Admin, Member or Contributor workspace roles carries it.
- List
Permission on Key Vault secrets allowing a caller to enumerate those in a vault, though their values are not returned.
- RANGE
Usable only in visual calculations, this DAX function picks a span of rows along an axis counted from the current one, say the previous six. Think of it as a simpler WINDOW, handy for moving totals.
Related terms
- ALLSELECTED
Useful for showing visual totals, this DAX function discards filters that come from a visual's row and column headers yet respects outside filters such as slicers; ALL, by comparison, would clear the slicer filters as well.
- Dynamic M query parameters
Connects a column in the model with an M parameter, so that when a viewer picks something in a slicer or filter, that choice is written into the DirectQuery source query. It can't be used alongside row-level security or aggregations.
- Field parameter
Puts a slicer in front of report readers so they can swap which measures or dimensions appear in a chart. Under the hood, Power BI stores it as a calculated table.
- List slicer
A preview slicer showing items as a vertical list, with support for hierarchies, searching and conditional formatting; it works well for long lists.
- Power BI bookmark
Captures how a report page looks at a moment, such as its slicer and filter selections, which visuals are shown and how they are sorted. Report bookmarks are saved with the report, personal ones belong to a single viewer, and groups keep them organised.
- Relative date filter
Keeps a moving window of dates relative to the current day, for instance the past 30 days or previous 2 calendar months, and is available as a filter type or slicer style. Relative time works the same way using hours or minutes on DateTime columns.
- Sync slicers
Has its own pane in Power BI reports: the Sync column carries a slicer's selection onto other pages, and the Visible column also displays the slicer there. Slicers given a common sync group name stay linked too, even when they use different fields.
