Terms in this definition
- Set
Secret permission in Key Vault for writing secrets; some older material refers to it as Create.
- ALL
A DAX function that ignores any filters and gives back every row of a table or every value of the named columns. Used within CALCULATE, it works as a modifier that clears filters, although REMOVEFILTERS states that intent more clearly where it is available.
- Semantic model
Sometimes called an OLAP model, this Power BI and Fabric layer defines the measures, hierarchies, tables and relationships that reports and dashboards query; star schema design is the usual pattern.
- Power BI Desktop
A free Windows program where authors connect to sources, shape and model data, and design reports before publishing them to the Power BI service. Dashboards are not made here.
- Workspace
Teams in Power BI and Microsoft Fabric collaborate in this folder-style container, which groups items such as reports, semantic models and lakehouses, controls who can access them and is assigned a capacity.
Related terms
- Gauge
Shows progress on one number towards its target as a circular arc in a Power BI report.
- Key influencers
Uses AI to find out which factors push a chosen metric up or down most, and lists them in order, inside a Power BI report.
- Paginated report
A Power BI report designed for printing, built in Power BI Report Builder, with a precisely controlled layout that runs over as many pages as it takes to show every row of a table, ready to print or save as PDF.
- Power Automate
Microsoft's service for building automated workflows. Placing its visual on a Power BI report gives readers a button that triggers a flow, which can receive the data currently filtered on the page.
- Publish to web
Generates a public link or embed code so that anybody online can see a Power BI report without signing in. A tenant setting keeps it off by default, and reports using row-level security can't be published this way.
- Slicer
Placed directly on a Power BI report page, this filter control narrows the other visuals on that page; it can appear as buttons, a list, a drop-down or a date range.
- Smart narrative
Generates written commentary on trends and key points in a Power BI report or one of its visuals, rewriting itself whenever the underlying data changes.
