SQL code saved under a name inside the database and executed when called, frequently taking parameters so the same logic serves many rows. It keeps that logic in the data tier.

Each book explains Stored procedure in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- Serverless
Compute tier for single Azure SQL databases that scales automatically, pauses when idle and charges by the second. It is offered in General Purpose and Hyperscale, not Business Critical, and reserved capacity does not apply.
- Schema
The middle part of a Unity Catalog name (
catalog.schema.table), grouping tables, views, volumes, functions and models inside a catalog. A grant on it covers everything in it now and later, and nothing inside can be reached withoutUSE SCHEMA. - Archive
Offline access tier for blobs, cheapest to store yet dearest to access. Reading a blob means rehydrating it first, which can take as long as 15 hours.
Related terms
- BATCH_COMPLETED_GROUP
Audit action group in Azure SQL that logs the full text of each query batch and stored procedure once it completes; it belongs to the recommended auditing configuration.
- Deferred name resolution
SQL Server behaviour that allows a stored procedure to be created even if a table it refers to has not been created yet. Only the syntax is validated up front, so a missing object causes an error the first time the procedure runs.
- Lookup activity
Use this pipeline step to pull back a file's or table's content, or whatever a query or stored procedure produces, so that subsequent steps can work with it. Results are limited to 5,000 rows or 4 MB.
- Retry conditions
Rather than retrying after any failure, a pipeline activity with this preview setting retries only if the failure type, error message or error code matches what you specify (429, signalling throttling, is a common choice). Supported activities are Notebook, Copy data, Stored procedure and Dataflow.
- Table-valued parameter
A parameter, based on a user-defined table type, that sends a set of rows to a stored procedure or function in a single call. It can only be read, so it has to be marked READONLY.
