Totals every numeric value held in one column. Where each row needs its own expression evaluated first, SUMX is needed.

Terms in this definition
- WHERE
Limits a SELECT, UPDATE or DELETE to just the rows meeting a condition. Omit it, and the statement hits every row.
- FIRST
A DAX function available only inside visual calculations. It fetches the value at the start of one axis of the visual's matrix, which makes it handy for comparing each point with the first; its opposite is LAST.
- SUMX
Iterates over each table row, evaluating an expression, then totals those results; text, logical values and blanks don't count.
Related terms
- Default summarization
A setting on a numeric column that decides which aggregation, such as Sum or Average, Power BI applies when the column is dropped into a visual. Identifier and year columns are best set to Don't summarize.
- Flow log version 2
Adds flow state plus bytes and packets in each direction to NSG flow logs. Begin (B) entries have no counts, whereas continuing (C) and end (E) entries cover traffic since the last tuple, so totals are the sum of all C and E entries.
- Group by (Power Query)
Collapsing rows by shared key values is what this Power Query step does, returning one row for each group together with summary columns, for example a count of rows, a sum or all the grouped rows. Fuzzy grouping is limited to Power Query Online.
- HAVING
Applies a condition to groups produced by GROUP BY, often on an aggregate such as SUM(). WHERE works earlier, on individual rows before they are grouped.
- Implicit measure
A summary, such as Sum, Average or Count, that Power BI builds on its own when a column is dropped into a visual. Excel PivotTables and other MDX clients, as well as calculation groups, rely on explicit measures instead, and the Discourage implicit measures setting prevents them.
- Pivot column
A Power Query transform that creates a new column for every distinct value in a column and fills it by aggregating a chosen value column, with Sum as the default or no aggregation. Unpivot reverses it.
- transformation
How a VCF Operations view summarises a property or metric across its time range, using functions like Sum, Maximum, Average, Percentile or Forecast.
