Each book explains SELECT in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- DML
Data Manipulation Language, the SQL statements SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE, which act on the rows held in tables.
- Serverless
Compute tier for single Azure SQL databases that scales automatically, pauses when idle and charges by the second. It is offered in General Purpose and Hyperscale, not Business Critical, and reserved capacity does not apply.
- Event
Table in Log Analytics where entries from Windows event logs are kept.
Related terms
- CLS
Column-level security controls which columns someone may read. Warehouses and SQL analytics endpoints implement it via
GRANT SELECTon named columns, while OneLake security handles it as part of a role defined on a table. - Database audit specification
Says which database-level actions or action groups SQL Server Audit should record, for example
SELECT ON SCHEMA::HR BY public; each database can have one per audit. Server-level groups go in a server audit specification. - DAX query
A query against a semantic model that returns a table, comparable to a T-SQL SELECT. It is written with
EVALUATE, optionally preceded byDEFINEfor query-only measures and variables and followed byORDER BY, and it doesn't alter the model. - db_datawriter
Built-in database role allowing inserts, updates and deletes on every user table, without permission to select from them.
- DQL
Data query language: SELECT and the other read-only parts of SQL. A Fabric warehouse handles DDL and DML alongside it, while an SQL analytics endpoint is limited to querying.
- Dynamic scope
Instead of a fixed machine list, an Azure Update Manager maintenance configuration can select machines by tag, OS, region or resource group, worked out each time it runs.
- Dynamic view
A view in Unity Catalog whose definition checks who is asking, using functions like
session_user()oris_account_group_member(), and hides rows or masks columns accordingly. Give usersSELECTon the view only, leaving the underlying tables ungranted. - File recovery
Restores individual files from an Azure VM backup. You download a script, valid for a limited time, that mounts the recovery point's disks over iSCSI on a suitable machine; copy what you need, then select Unmount Disks.
